The NI Project - The final hand over - 17/06/11

Well this is my last post for my project. At the start of the project i found it difficult as there was a problem that i thought was out of my control. But i found the problem and everything went along a breeze. Below is what I am going to explain what has gone wrong, what has gone right, what tasks could i have taken less time with etc.

What was planned and executed well? and What was presented with difficulties?

I layed out the plan into separate sections (phases), The first section was planning phase. This went very well, i created my CPA and gantt chart properly, I created a tick list with what i needed and created the presentation in which it gave an outline of what i was going to create. All of these tasks were executed very well with no problems.

The second phase of plan was to design the layout of the room. I designed the lab and topology very well. I did have to change the layout twice due to the length of cabling that was given to me.

The third phase was very critical to me completing the project or not. The reason why i say this is because if any hardware was not functioning properly or the software was corrupt the project could not have gone ahead but fortunately the PCs i needed worked perfectly as well as the all the cabling, printer and switch. These were all executed properly and within the time scale. The last part of this phase was to test to see if the server software will work on the machine. One machine met the minimum requirements but did not meet the RAM requirement's, so i took it out of another machine with the clients permission. The software did install correctly and the software was working perfectly.

The forth phase was the main creation of the stage. As said in blog, this stage did not go as well as i hoped. Designing the network and lab was executed and within the time scale i set it. Setting up the server was fine, at this point i was only consentrating on sorting out the DHCP and this was executed and planned fine. The major problem that occur ed was that the client machines could not see the server or domain name. I tried everything, re-installing the server, re-installing the client machines, changing the network cables etc. So i assumed it was the network switch that was playing up a bit, oh how wrong was I. To test this i created a peer to peer network and this worked fine without the server, all the computers were communicating fine with each other. Then my supervisor said have you tried pinging the server, this had not luck either. After this i done a through research on the Internet and tried what most people did, re-install the DHCP service and disabling the firewall. Then i was playing around with the network properties and rubbed out the IP address for 'preferred DNS' as i thought the server was part of dns, so i rubbed this out on the cleint machines and server machines and what happens, it starts to ping the server and the server could ping to the client machine. So at this point it was not executed as planned but it was excited enough for me to carry on. Luckily this did not put me back on my timescale as i spent Monday to Friday sorting it out.

The fifth phase went much smoother until i was told that we had half term, so at this point i changed my plan a bit to the stuff i can do at home during the holidays and the stuff i will do at college. The main to items i did at home were the creation of the testing questionnaire and the creation of the movie sample. These were both executed very well at home and did them within the timescale. The week after I had to re-install the server to be able to take pictures for each stage of the installation, at this point my plan was to use MS encoder but unfortunately there were some incompatibility with the software and graphics card. So i print screened each staged as my plan B and this went very well and with the timescale of the plan. I had to complete this task on time because the users that were testing the user accounts were testing it on the Wednesday. Wednesday came and after creating the user account, there were still some problems with accessing there own area and accessing the printer as i did not install it yet even though i put it on the test plan. After i got the feedback from the testers, i started to work by fixing these problems. The printer problem was that the drivers for the printer given to me were incompatible for a print server, so with a change request, i changed it to a peer to peer network. Users could still print across the network but they would of had to get the print form the other client machine. This was a little executed but had a plan b to continue with the project. After facing the problems on Friday, the same users came again and tested the user accounts again and all went well with questionnaires to prove it. Everything was going to according to plan at a smooth rate.

Phase six went very well, by now all the server is up and running with 3 client machines ready to be used. Now it was time to create the videos which was the next major part i had to complete. These teaching videos had to be clear, so people could understand of what is being shown to them. I believe i have given them clear instructions to install windows server 2003, i also added in some speeches to guide them through the more difficult parts and i believe i have achieved this task at its full potential.

Phase 7 was basic compared to what I was doing 2 weeks ago, it was basically to make sure everything was working and a good tidy up was in order ready for the presentation for the client.

How effective were the tools you used for planning and monitoring the project progress?

Project planner was fantastic in helping me plan out the whole project properly. I have to say that the CPA was not as effective as i hoped it to be as i never followed it, i always followed my gantt chart. Updating this blog twice a week was very hard aswell, i did it but twice a week was to much when you are trying to concentrate on the project. I would say for next time, you would need to update it once a week, i think that is much better and more controllable.

How good or bad was the plan and how did it help or hinder the progress of your project?

The plan was excellent until up to the point of the half term part. The plan was clearly layout in front of me and i maged to re arrange the tasks with out going other the hand over date. My plan that i made was brilliant as i thought ahead of what could go wrong and what could go right. Due to this there was one part that i thought was going to go very wrong but i didnt it went perfectly which allowed to have a couple of days sorting out the server problem. The part that went very well was testing the hardware and software.

I beleive that i have layed this plan out in such away, that i can do the project again with no worrys at all. The reason why i say this is because in previous projects i have done, they have been completed but i could nt follow that particular plan again.

The NI Project 15/06/11

This is the second to last blog update i will be doing for the project. The last couple of days have been very enjoyable, setting up all the videos and finishing off the server network. I had the same people testing everything again on their user accounts and they have said that all items work on their user accounts and the stuff that was not working have been fixed and are working. For example, grant smith "Y" drive was not working. So i repaired that and is all done. Most of my videos have been complete and i have had my client look at a couple of them. She did give me feedback on the videos she saw and adjested that feedback into the video. The one main point she said was to add a little introduction of what the video is showing.

Here is my second to last update for my blog:

The N I project - 08/06/11

Well back at college and nearly top the end now. The videos i have created last week, i showed to the client and supervisor and are both very happy of what it looks like and what it sounds like. This week I installed a printer to the network. My original plan was to craete a print server, but due to the printer drivers unable to support the server, i was unable to do this. Plan B was to add the printer to cleint machine and add it to each computer, this in affect is a peer to peer network for sharing a printer. I put in a change request and was accepted to make the change.

After that, i made up a questionaire and for two users to test the user accounts. I got them to test the user accounts and see if any errors have occured. After getting the feed back from the users, there were a few errors, such as cannot print and an error came up when logging in and one of the users could not see their "y" network drive. This will be sorted out as soon as possible.
This is the lastest update of the gantt chart

The N I project - 01/06/11

This blog update is a short one as I am on half term and away from college. Well during this week, I have been sorting out and editing the screen shots for the videos. This is only a temporay video for my client to be able to get an idea for what the videos are going to be like. This will be shown to both my supervisor and client. Since i have changed my gantt chart slightly i am up to date to what i need to do.

The N I Project - 25/05/11

On my last post i said that i have been struggling with the server. The main problem was that no computer was connecting to the server. After lots of research over the internet, I found that i didnt need to type in the IP address for the DNS server, i found out that this conflicts with the IP address of the main server and thats why it could not be contacted.

After pinging the server computer on all three computers, i connected them to the server through the domain. I then craeted a file server for the share storage for everyone to use. After that i created the user accounts and all ready for testing.

I realised that we had a week break and that the college will be closed, so this would have put my planning back a week. So i looked at the gantt chart and adjusted some of the tasks, so all the tasks that i can do at home, i scheduled it for me to do at home and some the rest of the tasks i will do at college when i come back into college.

Here is a print screen of my gantt chart:

The N I Project - 20/05/2011

On my last blog update i had a bit of a nightmare with the cleint machine connecting up with the server, well today it is still doing it. No client machine is still not finding the domain of the server. So i reinstalled the services agian, this time naming it somthing different (just in case) and still no pinging to the server computer.

So i thought to my self, if the cleint machine cannot communicate at that low of a level in network it has to be the hardware in the computer, the cbaling or the switch. To test the cabling, i swpped over cble to the server for another network cable, this did not work. So I unplugged the network cable to the server and made the three cleint machines a peer to peer network, this work perfectly between each computer. This narrow it down alot to the server software (have i installed it correctly or are the driver for the network corrupt on the server machine) Once i have done that I had a meeting with the client to see if she can give any suggestions. Some of them were good suggestions which i will use on monday. So i left the server for a bit and started to do some research on why this is happeing, i will also do reasearch over the weekend ready for some action on monday.

The N I Project - 18/05/2011

Well everyone, I am at phase 4 of completing my project. This phase is part where i create the final network with everything working ready for testing by users. I was going to have a meeting with the supervisor but as I had a lot to do about setting up the server, we both agreed to change it to next Monday. So whats been happening so far this week:

I came into college and had a look at my gantt chart to see what needs doing for the week coming. I started to draw my final design of where everything is going to go, i completed this monday afternoon.

I then sorted out the lab by moving the server computer and the client computers around, so it now looks like what i have planned. After that I installed all the cabling to the main switch. Once i had done that, i pinged each machine to make sure all the computers are talking to each other and they did.

After i had done all of that, I started to install windows server 2008 on the computer. This attempt failed as it kept on coming up with and error of hardware and the screen resolution was not big enough. As this occured i had a mini meeting with the client to discuss this matter. We both agreed that windows server 2008 was not sutible for what we need because of two reason, the hardware of the server machine and that we were unsure if windows xp will support the new updated version of windows server. After the dicussion we have finally gone with windows server 2003, this is a trial version that I have got a few years ago.

I started to install windows server 2003, everthing was working and I finally got to the part where i deploy the services such as DHCP and File server etc. I first gave the server an IP address and I typed in the same IP address in the preffered DNS. I first installed the DHCP, then the active directory and during the installation of this, the DNS installed by itself. After making sure everything works, i tried to ping the server computer, IT COULD NOT CONTACT THE SERVER!!!, so i tried typing in the domain and apprently it was not there. So I checked all the cabling to make sure nothing came out and everthing was in. So i went to the other computers to check if i could connect to them but no luck. I looked at the active directory and remeber my supervisor from work experince saying you have to add in the computer first and then add the computer to the domain, so i did that and still no luck and still couldnt ping to the server.

I then resinstalled the xp machines just incase they were not installed correctly, once all the clint machines were installed with a fresh version of winodws xp, i tried it again and still no luck with the pinging on any computer. So i went back to the server and used my supervisors way of installing the services and that did not work either. This time it was coming near to the end of the day, i finally realise that project can have its ups and downs esciapally when a project will be used in the future.

The next update will be this friday!!!! See you then!!!
